Parent Ed – Supporting Healthy Tech-Life Balance for Youth

We will learn about the foundational harms of a phone-based childhood, premature social media use, and the opportunity costs of excess screen time; Review of recent recommendations for childhood tech use norms from Social Psychologist Jonathan Haidt (author of Anxious Generation) and the U.S. Surgeon General, paired with tactical advice for how to roll out tech slowly in age-appropriate ways; Introduction to Kids IRL – a coalition of Marin families coordinating four new norms to roll back the phone-based childhood, improve family life, and protect children’s mental health; and Actionable and concrete next steps for parents tailored to elementary, middle, and high school age groups.

ScreenSense is an organization in Marin County that focuses on promoting healthy screen time habits for children and families. They offer resources and support to help manage digital use and encourage balanced, mindful technology use.

Speaker Bios: Rebekah Cunningham, Director of Technology, a trained data scientist and seasoned software professional, is dedicated to empowering youth and parents in cultivating a healthy relationship with technology.

Alex Tower Ewers, Director of Communications, holds a Masters in Holistic Health Education, has a background in Project Management and is passionate about building communities that foster balanced tech use.
